Do you offer manuscript appraisals of all genres?

Do I have to send in a complete manuscript?
No, we are happy to comment on a partial manuscript, but it would help if a synopsis of the remainder of the novel was also submitted so that we can give you the best feedback possible on the work as a whole.

What is the difference between a manuscript appraisal and a copy edit?
A copy edit will seek to highlight spelling or grammatical errors amongst other things. A manuscript appraisal will point out a few of these errors so that the writer knows what to look for but is more concerned with the structure of the manuscript as a whole.

What is the difference between a manuscript appraisal and a structural edit?
At NovelMakers we make no distinction between the two.

Can I post my manuscript to you rather than send it by email?
At this point in time, we can only accept manuscripts that are submitted by email.

Can I receive my appraisal and roadmap by post?
No, at this point in time we can only send your appraisal and roadmap by email.

Can I choose which appraiser I wish to work with?
Yes, you can. If you are not sure, we are happy to allocate your manuscript to the appraiser we feel will be the best fit.

Can I speak to my appraiser before they begin appraising my manuscript?
We do not usually offer this service as we can be of limited benefit to you before we have had a chance to read your work. You will, however, have the ability to give us any extra information you wish on the form you will submit to us.

How long will I have to wait to receive my manuscript appraisal?
We aim to respond with appraisals within 4-8 weeks of a manuscript being submitted to us. At the time of submission your appraiser will give you an idea of timescale as these are subject to change depending on the level of work your appraiser has pending. If that timescale is likely to change whilst your manuscript is with us, your appraiser will notify you by email of this.

Can I speak to my appraiser after they have finished reading my manuscript?
Yes, you can. We offer the facility for a follow up consultation at an additional price.

Can I have a refund if I am not happy with the appraisal I receive?
The nature of a manuscript appraisal means that it will contain constructive criticisms. These are designed to help you learn and grow as a writer. We will always seek to be fair and balanced in our appraisals, but we cannot promise you will always like what we have to tell you. We have to be honest in our assessments – anything less would be a disservice to you as a writer. We are therefore unable to provide a refund if you are unhappy with the appraisal you receive.
